Project-At-a-Glance:
The Stoneview Spa is a private-use health and wellness building designed for physical and mental rejuvenation. Nestled into a meadowed landscape that takes advantage of tidal river views, the glass-and-stone project feels connected to its surroundings from inside and out, serving as a tranquil respite for generations to come.
Project Narrative: The project is located in a rural setting along a coastal river on a site that was once home to a large picturesque white farmhouse. The farmhouse was demolished several years prior to the client purchasing the piece of property. The building is envisioned as an unexpected surprise, one that is slowly revealed from its approach with glimpses around a restored rock wall. The entry facade is recessed into grade so that the structure feels of a smaller scale and seems to be nestled into the landscape. On the waterside, the grade drops down and the facade opens up to almost all glass, helping to bring a sense of nature inside the building. The project includes a gym, home office, 1.5 baths, steam/shower, sauna, living/kitchen/dining area, hot tub, outdoor dining area with a pizza oven, and patio. A neutral, crisp palette lends a feeling of calm and tranquility, while the use of both local and natural materials, including locally quarried granite and red cedar roofing and trim, helps the building to feel connected with its surroundings and to blend in with the natural landscape. With the spa boasting a considerable amount of glass and occupying a stunning natural site, every window has a breathtaking view of either rolling hills covered in meadow, the beautiful tidal river that wraps around the property, or the surrounding natural woods woven with 40+ acres of walking and running trails.
