Project-At-a-Glance:
A clean and contemporary aesthetic define this modern Scandinavian-inspired house. An all-black
exterior contrasts with a white interior to provide a beautiful backdrop to the exterior view and
interior artwork. An existing house on site provided the base for the design, but this major
renovation completely modified the aesthetic.

Project Narrative:

An existing ranch house greeted the visitor, and exterior stair brought one up to the main  level in what must have been treacherous conditions in bad weather. Once arriving, one was greeted with a small, outdated kitchen and a knotty pine Great Room.

The owner saw past many of these issues, and with the help of the architect, envisioned a cleanand contemporary Scandinavian-inspired house to retire full time to Maine. For years, the owner had been collecting artwork, antiques, and furniture from Maine artists. The white interior was a perfect backdrop for artwork, the large glass doors and windows allowed for wonderful framed views of the water, and the black exterior set the contrast for the interior and settles into the landscape.

While additional view corridors were opened to the landscape, new outdoor living was added with a small screened porch and a deck bordered by a clear glass railing for unobstructed views of Small Point Harbor.

The existing house was raised so a new, insulated and water-tight foundation, could be installed. As much of the existing house was re-used as possible, but many imperfections were discovered during construction. However, the footprint and massing remain and the architect was able to completely change the aesthetic of the house while updating and modernizing to today's standards.

This project was a great collaboration with the interior design and owner very much involved in all phases of design and furnishing. The lighting design compliments the architecture and highlights the artwork.
