While this project utilizes many of the measureables from the Framework for Design Excellence, at its core are Ecology, Wellness and Discovery.

Ecology (& Water): Sited on a tight hillside site of the Hollywood Hills, this project is subject to Los Angeles’ hillside ordinances, which require strict attention to maintain the natural stability of the land. Close measures were taken to limit water runoff from the site, carefully plan for the excavation and grading adjustments, and proper maintenance of trees and bedrock that help maintain the stability of the soils. The team enlisted civil and soils engineers as as well as pre-construction services from a contractor ensure these measures were met and a permit was granted from the City.

Wellness: The pandemic surprised everyone and shifted the reality of our work/life balance. This was very true for our client, a young creative and entrepreneurial couple, who suddenly needed to work and run their businesses from their home. With a baby on the way, they knew they’d need a quiet and secluded place away from the primary home to conduct work. They also needed a place for their family to stay while coming to see and take care of the new baby. The accessory unit became a place for that — a place of wellness, inclusive of a gym and ample natural light — for them to maintain a healthy work/life balance.

Discovery: The site setbacks provided a wonderful chance to express a unique building form: the triangle. This pure but often underutilized form was not only a sense of delight and discovery for us and our clients, but we knew would be one for visitors as well. What’s more, its play on the Spanish style home is a fun twist and unexpected surprise in the otherwise contemporary design.
